嗨!我的名字是許捷，在嘉義縣長大，國、高中時就讀基督教協同高級中學。我在高一升高二的暑假隨家人到美國馬里蘭州貝塞斯達鎮華特強森高中(Walter Johnson High School ，WJHS)讀書兩年，現在已經畢業，在伊利諾大學香檳分校(University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign，UIUC) 雙主修物理和國際關係。

本書記載我在WJHS 就讀時遇到的大小事，希望可以幫助正要出國讀書、或是純粹想了解美國的你，對於美國高中文化有進一步的認識。

我在去WJHS 之前都是在台灣的教育體系下學習，因此到美國後花了許多功夫才克服溝通上的障礙和文化上的隔閡。誠如書名《美國高中生存指南：一年內，從ESOL 到AP Lang 的台灣小高一奮鬥史兩年》所提示，我希望可以透過分享我的經驗，幫助其他台灣留學生適應國外環境、融入當地生活。

Each person goes through high school with his or her own trepidations and shortcomings; however, it is always an unique individual experience apart from any other person. For immigrants’ sons or daughters, the experience is all the more daunting because of the cultural and sometimes emotional disconnect that our own parents never got to experience and could not be that academic or even emotional beacon of guidance we often needed. However, our stories are often the stories of future American leaders and elites because the adversities we faced as teenagers transform our thinking and make us realize that there is nothing that we can not overcome if we work hard and study hard.
I hope you will enjoy Chieh Hsu’s new book as much as I have in taking a time capsule to go back to those awkward and sometimes scary high school years. Especially in the vivid characters that Chieh describes in such vivacious detail, it illustrates the learning and maturing process of a young immigrant. The book provides a unique insight into how a young immigrant and his family deal with an unknown education system, through its ups and downs, and how to navigate successfully through it. It stands out for its focus on the junior and senior year of high school and gives a lot of practical pointers to similarly situated students looking to find some guidance in how to deal with the American education system.
