Mozart won international fame as a child prodigy. He was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Mozart composed over 600 works. His Oboe Quartet in F, K.370, was written in 1781 for oboe, violin, viola and cello. It was for Friedrich Ramm, a virtuoso oboist in Europe, that Mozart composed the quartet in order to show off his virtuosity.
The first movement opens with the first subject played by the oboe, a lively, carefree, and finely turned melody. The violin shares some of the thematic material. The Adagio tests the oboist with some anguished melodic leaps. Toward the end, the oboe sings out a disconsolate cadenza. The Rondeau lopes along in 6/8. The second episode contains a fleeting moment of independence for the oboe as it spins a charming song in a 4/4 rhythm against the 6/8 of the strings. This quartet is now arranged by saxophonist Cheng-yu Lee. He transformed F major into A-flat for alto saxophone and piano.
