Essential Written Grammar

The primary aim of this book is to present a manageable coverage of grammar at the intermediate, which will serve the purpose of suggesting the range of structures that a student would need to be familiar with receptively and productively to be able to communicate and write efficiently.

The book aims to be a true pedagogical grammar for everyone learning English as a second language. It is concerned with the workings of the language and to define what English as a foreign language is in terms of grammar.

Complex forms of organizations have been avoided. Before they begin the study of English, many students are familiar with the idea of sentence formation and word order and the idea of ‘parts of speech’: the use of nouns, verbs, prepositions, and so on. And this is the pattern this grammar follows. A glance at the Contents pages will give the user an overview of the way the book has been organized.

The book defines common technical terms, such as noun, verb, etc. that are considered familiar to the user. While it avoids complex terms, it does introduce terms which are necessary for an accurate description of what is happening. ‘Rules’ are descriptive rather than prescriptive and are written as simply and accurately as possible.
The contents of this book include all the major English grammar rules, which constitute the foundation of English grammar. The exercises can facilitate the English grammar learning. Every exercise illustrates an important grammar rule. You don’t need to do the exercise in a sequential way, for they are not designed based on the level of difficulties. You are advised to make use of the contents to select grammar points which pose a challenge to you in your English courses.

We attempt to write a grammar that is up-to-date, accurate and readable. Through careful presentation and design, we have tried to create a work that will be a pleasure to use. We also hope that it will prove to be a reliable and indispensable companion to English learners, especially in the Indo-Asia Area.
