Fiction. In their investigation of conspiracy theorists diverse as flat-earthers, gluten rejectors, and a whole slew of Cassandras warning us about everything from the Reptilians to the Bilderbergers, Professor Ted Gershem and his graduate school abnormal psychology seminar find themselves plunged into a world of wonders where nothing is what it seems, where dark unseen forces battle for control of our minds. In this hilarious, outrageous gambol through the dark side, Gershem and his students get a lot more then they bargained for when they innocently commenced their survey, winding up in all sorts of bizarre situations and dealing with people, as a psychologist might say, with exceedingly rich inner lives in a world turned upside down. Gershem himself is drawn, well, pushed by his actress girlfriend Anna actually into a little theatre group which is producing a play about Ayn Rand’s tempestuous relationship with her much younger lover. But that’s not all the group is up to and the professor soon finds himself participating in various crisis acting jobs such as disaster aftermaths and school shootings.
Meanwhile, two of his students make a grand tour of every conspiracy imaginable which is both highly enlightening and thoroughly spooky. The various nuts they encounter along the way may be entertaining, but there is something sinister about their enthusiasm, something so irrational the two of them begin to think the whole world is unhinged. And maybe they’re right. Or may be they’re not. Maybe the world really is a conspiracy of the rulers over the ruled. Maybe what we see and experience is nothing but an intricate propaganda program. If anyone knows, they ain’t talking.
