Uejima Onitsura (1661-1738) was a major haiku poet who along with Basho, the more important influence to be sure, changed the course of haiku history. Onitsura’s writings on makoto (sincerity) had an impact on later writers and today is still considered important. This is the first book in English solely devoted to Onitsura and includes over 400 haiku, with the original Japanese and romaji, as well as an introduction, reading list and notes.
