丹大是國內最大面積的野生動物重要棲息環境，由南投及花蓮林區管理處共同經營管理。丹大野生動物重要棲息環境位於台灣地理中心-中央山脈最深處，跨越亞熱帶，暖溫帶及冷溫帶三種氣候帶，具豐富之生物多樣性，孕育豐富的動植物資源，北與太魯閣國家公園接壤，南與玉山國家公園、玉里野生動物重要棲息環境為鄰，鏈結國內中央脊樑山脈各保護留區，為眾多生物南往北返「中央山脈生態廊道」之重要通道與生物僻護所。
