Li Ban-Yue, daughter of the prime minister, accompanied by her maid, Chun-Cao, goes to a temple in the mountains to burn incense in praise of the gods. On her way there, Wu Du, son of the Royal Secretary, harasses her for her beauty. Fortunately, she is rescued by a righteous man named Xue Mei-Ting but has nothing to reward him for his courage. Later, when Xue Mei-Ting comes upon Wu Du bullying and killing a fisherman, he becomes enraged and kills Wu Du in turn. He then turns himself in to the court to ensure no one else becomes implicated.
Concerned about Xue Mei-Ting’s welfare, Chun-Cao comes to the court to make enquiries about his case. When she witnesses Wu’s mother throwing her weight around, forcing Prefect Hu to sentence Xue to death by beating, she intervenes to prevent the sentence from being carried out. When Prefect Hu demands to know the reason for her intervention, Chun-Cao, out of anxiety, makes up the excuse that Xue Mei-Ting is the prime minister’s future son-in-law. Wu’s mother, caught unawares and suspecting Chun-Cao of lying, sends someone to the prime minister’s mansion to find out the truth in the company of Chun-Cao.
Chu-Cao decides to stall for time on her way back to the mansion. When they reach the mansion, she advises Li Ban-Yue to go along with her ruse to save Xue’s life. Ban-Yue reluctantly admits her engagement to Xue to the enquirers. Prefect Hu, believing her words, intends to go to the capital to take credit for sparing the life of the prime minister’s future son-in-law. When Ban-Yue learns about this, she is forced to go to the capital with Chun-Cao where she explains the whole thing to her father.
The prime minister blames Chun-Cao for behaving unscrupulously and writes to Prefect Hu, denying Xue is engaged to his daughter and ordering Xue to be executed. Chun-Cao and Ban-Yue manage to intercept the letter and change it into a wedding announcement. Prefect Hu Jin is so pleased to receive the letter and makes a grand occasion of sending Xue off to the capital for the wedding. Officials from the capital and the provinces all send wedding presents when they learn about the “announcement”; even the emperor gives an inscribed wooden tablet to the newly weds. Prime Minister Li can do nothing but accept the consequences and gives his consent to Ban-Yue to marry Xue Mei-Ting.
