"Taiwan is a long, narrow island with many mo untai ns packed into a small space. There are ove r 220 peak s over 3000m in heig ht acro ss Taiwan, and mountain rang es run throughout. includin g the Central Mountain Range. the Xucs han Range. the Yushan Range. the Alishan Range. and the Coasta l Range, along with smaller ranges such as the volcanoes of Datun and others . Many of the island's alpine forests have clear delineations in the form of undulating geography or waterways. which also creates a rich geographical spectacle rich with unique ecosystems. In this age where hiking and mountain climbing arc growing in popularity, trails through such areas are a great way for people to get out into the mountains and closer to nature. This burea u manages about 58% of Taiwan' s forested area s. a nd throu gh the development of a national tra il system we arc working to promote alp ine vac atio ns and ""[eave no trace"" mo unta in exped itio ns. a ll wh ile str iving to prot ect the fores ts as well. Through this. we hope to ge t more people exploring the trails of Taiwan and experiencing the alpine beauty the island has to offer. We have worked in concert with local township admi nistration. communities. and organizations to ens ure we make the most of the community resources available. We arc also using an ""adopt a trail"" system to help maintain the trails. During days of, people are welcome to come experience for themselv es the fru its of this work and learn how we can all work together to take practical measures to protect our mountain forests . The Dongshih Forest Admi nistration. part of the Forestry Bureau. covers much of central Taiwan. includin g Taichung Ci ty. Nantou County. and Hualien County . Thi s booklet has chosen 12 trails. including the Yuanzui-Shaolai-Xiaoxuc Nation al Tra il. the 3000m-and· upward Hehuan trai ls. and the renowned ""Seven Heroes of Guguan."" This wealth of natural resou rces, with its many changing face s over the seasons. has also played parts in the historical forestry industry and Ahoriginal culture. and each trail tells itsown story. These trails surely are the best way to ge t into our beloved forests. Taiwan is more beautiful for its mountains, j ust as the mountains arc more beautiful for us. Why not come and experience the combinat ion of know ledge, conservation. and leave-no-t race ideology through a wonderful trip into the wilderness in our own back yard? With a decade 's hard work done on these trai ls, I am pro ud to start off this wonderful introduction to the sights, sounds, and sensations on display."
