This title in "Bloom's Modern Critical Views," series, presents a critical portrait of the author, Mark Twain, plus an introductory essay by Harold Bloom. In it he provides insights into Twain's work and then selects eleven essays which discuss aspects of the various Twain novels, with emphasis on Huckleberry Finn. Bernard DeVoto, T. S. Eliot, F. R Leavis and Robert Penn Warren keep company with more recent critics such as Shelley Fisher Fishkin and Neal Schmitz. References to Twain's work include Eliot's essay on the River which, like Huckleberry Finn, "has no beginning and no end." Fishkin speculates on the influences of African-American voices on Twain's language, while an essay by John Carlos Rowe writes about Post-Colonialist Twain who takes on American imperialism. Joseph Coulombe deals with another look at Twain's depiction of nature in Huckleberry Finn. The substantial essays will tax unprepared high school readers but represent some of the best and most readable criticism available. In high schools where International Baccalaureate programs or AP courses spend time parsing literature, these will be valuable references. Back matter includes a Twain chronology, notes on the contributors, a bibliography for the eleven articles, and an index.
