High mountains climbing started all from Yushan. With the mass media leading this mountain climbing trend, 1926 was the peak year of student climbing Yushan in the Japanese colonial era.??It was in this time that Mr Fang Ching Mian followed his mentor’s step and climbed the Yushan for the first time, and this was also the beginning of his lifelong career in Yushan. For the next 40 year, Mr. Fang Ching Mian worked as a tour guide and a photographer in Yushan and Alishan.??He climbed Yushan for over 3000 times to record Yushan’s natural landscape and change led by human development. At the year of 1972 he was named after ”Uncle New High” by English Hansheng magazine. (Yushan was referred as the “New High Mountain” in the Japanese colonial time)

In December 2009, all the photos and equipments of Mr. Fang Ching Mian were donated to Yushan National Park by his eldest son, Mr. Fang Zhong Xiong, for gratis on the 25th anniversary of Yushan National Park. To present the creativity of the “Uncle New High” to everyone, we host this memorial exhibition and print special publication for later generations to commemorate.?Yushan National Park not only appreciates what Mr. Fang Ching Mian did for Yushan, meanwhile, we would also be very grateful if other early pioneers of Taiwan mountaineering may share their photos and collections for preservation. This will enable better care of the Yushan antiques and historic materials, thus lead the old Yushan to shine again in the modern days.
