The world-renowned classicist EDITH HAMILTON
was bom in Dresden, Germany, and spent her childhood
in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She graducated from Bryn Mawr,
where she receieved both B.A. and M.A. degrees, and then started
on a most distinguished teaching career. She regarded the high
point of her life to be a 1957 ceremony in which King Paul of Greece
awarded her the Golden Cross of the Order of Benefaction and
made her an honorary citizen of Athens. Miss Hamilton died in
Washington in May, 1963.
