Author and illustrator Rothman, who grew up in New York City, learned about farming when she began visiting the family farm in Nebraska where her husband grew up. The whimsical color illustrations throughout this visual dictionary are based on that farm. In addition to identifying breeds of animals, types of farm machinery and tools, and various plants and food crops, the book offers illustrated instructions for tasks and processes on the farm, from trimming a horse's hoof to building a barrel smokehouse, raising a barn, spinning yarn, making a quilt, and cooking and storing meat and produce. The book also includes reference maps on growing seasons, recipes, and charts of animal breeds. Annotation c2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
