《日治臺灣醫療公衛五十年》蒐集、譯註日治臺灣醫療、衛生的重要史料及文獻，是研究日治臺灣醫療公衛史極其重要且必備的書。

本書雖分為年表、業績、法規文獻三個獨立部分，卻有其相互參照的一貫性：舉例來說：
第壹部年表中提到1910年「4月19日府令第二十九號公布臺灣小學校兒童身體檢查規程。此為本島學生接受正規身體檢查之濫觴，公學校和直轄學校亦適用此規程。」（頁63）。
第貳部人口篇第六章「體格與體力」，對青少年體格、運動能力、身體測量結果都有詳實完整的記載，包括「日、臺男女身高比較表」、「臺灣人男、女身高胸圍係數變化表」、「日本人、臺灣人與阿美族之小腿對身高比」等6個科學測量的數據統計表，以及當時的研究文獻書目作為參考。（頁130-148）。
第參部法規文獻部分，可以直接查閱到「臺灣小學校兒童身體檢查規程」以及「體檢表的樣式」（頁544-545），作更深入的閱讀與了解；文獻方面可參考一篇堀內次雄於1934年發表的演講稿「臺灣衛生狀況的今昔比較」（頁574-586），以深入淺出的方式，描述整體公衛政策背後的用心與理念。

本書編者投注十餘年的心血蒐集、編選、譯註日治臺灣醫公衛極其重要的文獻資料，陸續參與的工作人員、譯者多達十餘人。全書共600頁、近30萬字、100餘各種主題的統計表、比較表等，以及40餘幅珍貴圖版以全彩呈現，透過本書讓我們得更深入了解臺灣近代公衛建設、以及當時的社會概況。

“50 Years of Advancement: A Collection of Taiwan’s Medical and Public Health Records Under the Japanese Colonial Rule” assembles the most important historical public health records and documents of Taiwan under the Japanese Colonial Rule. Translated, annotated and assembled, this book is essential reading for anyone interested public health during this period.

The book is organized into three main sections. The first, consists of the translation and annotation of “Taiwan Medical Health Chronology” written and assembled by 堀內次雄 and 丸山芳登 which provides chronological documentation of the most important medical and public health events of the time.

The second section provides a translation of the most important historical record – “The Japanese Colonial Period Taiwan Medical Public Health Advancements” written by丸山芳登. This piece includes detailed records of various research, surveys and statistical results, which paints a comprehensive picture of medical and public health during that period.

Finally, the third section includes significant medical, public health regulations and documentation, carefully picked and translated by the editor.  This serves as an important reference for a thorough understanding of Japan’s philosophy towards the public health policy of Taiwan during the colonial rule.
